When you select a format, the program displays a typing page \ which approximates the size of the format you selected. You can begin \ typing once the typing page displays. When you complete a page, you can \ save the page in a file. When you are ready to resume work on the page, \ you can retrieve it from your file cabinet. \ Five print modes are available for you to print your work: page-at-a-time , \ print-on-command, line-at-a-time, word-at-a-time and character-at-a-time. \ These modes allow you to print as you type a page, line, word, or character. \ The print-on-command mode allows you to print whenever you want and any \ amount you want. The AT&T 7500S typewriter is the recommended printer for the Typewriter \ Editor. Appendix A of the user's guide contains the information you need to \ know to set up the printer with your UNIX PC. If you select a printer other \ than the AT&T 7500S Typewriter, refer to the printer's manual for setup \ instructions. You can select the size of page from the initial \ menu or by entering the size with the Opts command. You can also select the \ mode of printing which allows you to cause the printing to happen all at one \ time (Page mode), line by line (Line mode), word by word (Word mode), and \ each character as it is typed (Character mode). The typewriter editor also \ supports left, right, top, and bottom margins. Tabs may be set and reset at \ any column. There is a word wrap option which can be enabled or disabled at any time \ (except in character mode). This option allows you to type without pressing \ the Return key, and the program will determine when to put your typing on \ the next line. In general, the typewriter editor works like an electronic typewriter, \ with a display. \ Touching any of the "QWERTY" keys causes the corresponding character to \ appear on the computer display, and at some later time, on the printer. \EOT\ Name = Print Overview Llabel = "PRINTER OVERVIEW" Slabel = "PRINTER" Branch = Using Help, Twe Overview, Page Layout, Modes, Word Wrap, Editing Commands, Typing Title = "Using the Printer" Text = In order to use your computer as a typewriter, you must have connected and \ set up the printer. The connections are described in your owner's manual \ and the set up is also described there, as well as in the help screens \ for Administration (Printer Setup). Once your printer is set up, you can \ administer the print spooling (this allows you to print while you are \ using your computer for other things). You do this using the "Printer Queue" \ and "Print" objects within your Office. These are described in the help \ screens for your Office. When typing, you can either use the printer in the normal queued way, \ printing a full page at a time, with the print spooled to the default printer \ or you can connect the printer directly to the program so you can see your \ typing as you go along. This is done by specifying one of the three "print \ modes" line at a time, word at a time, or character at a time. Sometimes in page mode, your printout will not show up. This is usually \ because some error in the system has caused the printer to stop. (Turning \ off the power while printing, for example.) In these cases, your printing \ will still be in the "Printer Queue" (look for it there), and you can get \ it to print out by using the "Printer Restart" option of Administration. \EOT\ Name = Page Layout Llabel = " PAGE LAYOUT" Slabel = "LAYOUT" Branch = Using Help, Twe Overview, Print Overview, Word Wrap, Margins, Tabs, Margin Release Title = "Laying Out the Typing Page" Text = Laying out the typing page consists of specifying the length and width of \ the paper, the top, bottom, left, and right margins, and a print mode. \ Once you have a page layout, you can save the layout and attach it to the \ main menu of the typewriter. The typewriter comes with several common \ page layouts to get you started. When you save a page layout, you give it \ a name, and this name is put in the main typewriter menu. You can change \ the page layout at any time during the typing session, however, all your \ typing will be lost whenever you change page formats. The "Opts" command (key) is used to bring up the form to change page formats. \EOT\ Name = Margins Llabel = "MARGINS" Slabel = "MARGINS" Branch = Twe Overview, Print Overview, Modes, Tabs Title = "How to Use Margins" Text = Left, right, top, and bottom margins are supported by the typewriter. The \ left and right margins may be easily set while you are typing using the F6 \ and F8 screen labeled keys. The left margin is used for positioning whenever \ you touch the Return or Enter keys. The right margin is used to enclose the \ typing when word wrap is enabled. When word wrap is disabled, an audible \ bell sounds when you reach five (5) positions left of the margin. (There \ is no margin lock, so you can continue typing all the way to the edge of the \ paper, if you wish.) Margin Release (key F7) can be used when word wrap is \ enabled to let you type into the right margin area, if this is necessary. \ The Tab and Back Tab keys also stop at the margins, in addition to any tab \ stops. The top margin is used to position the cursor for initial typing, and when \ you enter the Home key. The bottom margin is currently unused. \EOT\ Name = Modes Llabel = " MODES" Slabel = " MODES" Branch = Twe Overview, Page Mode, Line Mode, Word Mode, Character Mode Title = "Modes of Printing Your Typing" Text = The printing modes are what makes the typewriter editor both unique and useful. \ Normally, when you use a computer printer, the output is printer only after \ you have totally composed your work. You get it all at one time. The \ typewriter editor can do this too. It is called "Page Mode" and when you \ are using the typewriter editor this way, it only prints when you hit either \ the Print key, or the F1 screen labeled key. However, the typewriter editor can also output your typing to the printer in \ several other ways. They are: line at a time, word at a time, and character \ at a time. As the names suggest, these modes cause the computer to print your \ typing in different units, as you desire. \EOT\ Name = Page Mode Llabel = " PAGE MODE" Slabel = "PAGE" Branch = Twe Overview, Modes, Line Mode, Word Mode, Character Mode Title = "Printing a Page at a Time" Text = At any time, you (re)print the entire page by touching the Print or F1 key. \ By putting the program into page mode, your typing will be printed \ only when you specify print by touching the Print or F1 keys. \ At this time, the complete page will be printed, starting at the very \ top of the display, to the very end. It will be printed without changing \ the initial vertical setting on the printer. \EOT\ Name = Line Mode Llabel = " LINE MODE" Slabel = "LineMode" Branch = Twe Overview, Modes, Page Mode, Word Mode, Character Mode Title = "Typing a Line at a Time" Text = By putting the program into line mode, your typing will be printed \ whenever you complete a line. There are several ways to complete a \ line, including touching the Return or Enter keys, typing beyond the \ end of the margin with word wrap enabled, hitting the down or up arrow \ keys, and any other line changing command (Beg, Home, End, etc.). \EOT\ Name = Word Mode Llabel = " WORD MODE" Slabel = "WordMode" Branch = Twe Overview, Modes, Page Mode, Line Mode, Character Mode Title = "Typing a Word at a Time" Text = By putting the program into word mode, your typing will be printed \ whenever you complete a word. There are several ways to complete a \ word, including touching the space or Tab keys, and the forward arrow key \ beyond any buffered typing. Also any line ending character, such as \ the Enter or Return keys, hitting the down or up arrow \ keys, and any other line changing command (Beg, Home, End, etc.). \EOT\ Name = Character Mode Llabel = " CHAR MODE" Slabel = "CharMode" Branch = Twe Overview, Modes, Page Mode, Line Mode, Word Mode Title = "Typing a Character at a Time" Text = By putting the program into character mode, your typing will be printed \ each time you enter a printable character. This mode is comparable to the \ old electric or manual typewriters, and does not allow you to backup and \ correct your mistakes, as the other modes do. You can, however, see what \ you have typed immediately, which is useful for forms, etc. \EOT\ Name = Editing Commands Llabel = " EDIT COMMANDS" Slabel = "EDIT CMD" Branch = Twe Overview, Typing, Modes, Page Mode, Line Mode, Word Mode Title = "Commands to Use for Editing" Text = There are several editing commands which can be used to change your text. \ You may use the BackSpace, Delete, DleteChar and InputMode keys to change \ your text. \EOT\ Name = Word Wrap Llabel = " WORD WRAP" Slabel = "WORD WRP" Branch = Twe Overview, Margins, Margin Release, Modes Title = "Enabling and Disabling Word Wrap" Text = The word wrap is designed to keep typing within the left and right margins. \ The typewriter program will determine where the last word on a line ends, and \ move the next word to the next line. This will produce good "ragged right" \ typing in most cases. In those cases where you would like the typing to \ protrude into the right margin, use the Margin Release function (key F7). \ This key must be pressed before your typing reaches the right margin. The word wrap function will not work very well for very short margins. \ Any time a single word will not completely fit on the line, the program \ will arbitrarily break it into two lines. This is probably not what you \ want, so either disable wordwrap (touch key F5), or use Margin Release (F7). The default is Word Wrap on in all print modes except character at a time. \ The screen labeled key tells you whether word wrap is on or off, and touching \ the key changes the value. Word wrap cannot be used with character at a \ time typing. \EOT\ Name = Margin Release Llabel = " MARGIN RELEASE" Slabel = "MARG REL" Branch = Twe Overview, Margins, Word Wrap Title = "Releasing and restoring the Margins" Text = Margin Release is used to defeat the word wrap facility. This is it's only \ function, as there is no hard margin lock used. Pressing Margin Release (F7) \ allows you to type into the right margin. It is cleared by pressing either \ Margin Restore, Return, or Enter. \EOT\ Name = Tabs Llabel = " TABS" Slabel = " TABS" Branch = Twe Overview, Margins Title = "Setting and Unsetting Tabs" Text = By pressing the F4 Tab Set key, you set and reset tab stops. Tab stops \ work in both the forward and backward direction, using the Tab and Back Tab \ (shift Tab) keys. There are also "implicit" tab stops at the right and \ left margins, and at the right and left edge of the paper. \EOT\ Name = Typing Llabel = " TYPING" Slabel = " TYPING" Branch = Twe Overview, Modes, Margins, Word Wrap, Tabs, Editing Commands Title = "Using this Program to Type" Text = This is the easiest part of all. The \ Page key can be used to view the next full page of the description, and \ the Shift-Page key can be used to view the previous page of the \ description.
