KERMIT BINARY FILES December 1996 This file last updated: Fri Dec 6 13:51:31 1996 Kermit software is not in the public domain. Be sure to read the copyright notices that come with each version. THE KERMIT FILES MAY NOT BE REDISTRIBUTED ON CD-ROMS OR OTHER MEDIA WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION OF THE OFFICE OF KERMIT DEVELOPMENT AND DISTRIBUTION, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY. THEY SHOULD NOT BE COPIED TO OTHER FTP SITES FROM WHICH CD-ROMS ARE MADE. THEY MAY NOT BE RESOLD, REMARKETED, BUNDLED, EMBEDDED, ADAPTED, GIVEN AWAY, OR OTHERWISE REDISTRIBUTED BY COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISES TO THEIR CUSTOMERS, CLIENTS, OR PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION. For further information, send email to kermit@columbia.edu. This directory, kermit/bin contains 8-bit binary files, in most cases executable Kermit program images for various platforms, with names corresponding to the naming conventions used in the a, b, c, and d directories. For instance, where the msvibm.boo file in the kermit/a directory is a printable text encoding of msvibm.exe, the real msvibm.exe can be found in kermit/bin. THE FILES IN THIS DIRECTORY ARE, IN GENERAL, NOT COMPLETE KERMIT PACKAGES, BUT RATHER, ISOLATED BINARIES. A COMPLETE KERMIT PACKAGE USUALLY INCLUDES NUMEROUS AUXILLIARY FILES. C-KERMIT AND MS-DOS KERMIT ARE ALSO INCOMPLETE WITHOUT THE APPROPRIATE PUBLISHED MANUAL, "USING C-KERMIT" OR "USING MS-DOS KERMIT". Look in the kermit/archives directory for prepackaged versions of the most popular Kermit programs. Before downloading any of these binary files with Kermit, be sure to "set file type binary". If you are getting these files with FTP, also be sure to use the appropriate command to tell your FTP program that these are binary files, such as "type binary". Here is a listing of the more popular entries in this directory: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MS-DOS KERMIT MS-DOS Kermit binaries for the IBM PC, PS/2, and compatibles. NOTE: you should normally not retrieve MS-DOS Kermit binaries separately; they are part of a larger package, which is packaged together in a ZIP archive, msvibm.zip, stored in the kermit/archives directory. msvibm.exe -- Current version of MS-DOS Kermit for the IBM PC family msvibm_p.exe -- Ditto, but with Portuguese-language legends msvibm.pif -- Windows 3.0 PIF file for current IBM PC MS-DOS Kermit MS-DOS Kermit binaries for non-IBM compatibles. Many (most) of these are not at the same release level as the IBM PC version of MS-DOS Kermit, and most are quite old. msvapr.exe -- MS-DOS Kermit for Apricot msvdm2.exe -- MS-DOS Kermit for DECmate-II msvgen.exe -- Generic DOS version of MS-DOS Kermit msvgri.exe -- MS-DOS Kermit for Grid Compass msvhp1.exe -- MS-DOS Kermit for HP-150 msvhpx.exe -- MS-DOS Kermit for HP Portable msvrb1.exe -- MS-DOS Kermit for DEC Rainbow msvtip.exe -- MS-DOS Kermit for Texas Instruments Professional msvv90.exe -- MS-DOS Kermit for Victor/Sirius 9000 msvv90sea.exe - Self-extracting archive of Victor 9000 distribution disk msvv9t.exe -- Very old and small Victor version with Tek emulation msvwng.exe -- MS-DOS Kermit for Wang PC msvz10.exe -- MS-DOS Kermit for Heath/Zenith 100 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- C-Kermit 5A(191) for OS/2: (look in kermit/archives/cko191.zip) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- C-KERMIT C-Kermit binaries. These are not compressed or tar'd. Just transfer them in binary mode and rename them appropriately. Most of them are for version 6.0, some are for earlier releases, or for test releases of 6.0; each one is the latest one we have been able to obtain. For a better view of these files, visit http://www.columbia.edu/kermit/ck60.html. ---------------------- UNIX C-KERMIT BINARIES IMPORTANT: The UNIX C-Kermit package consists not only of the binary executable program but also an assortment of text files. Make sure you get those too: kermit/archives/cku192txt.tar.Z (or .gz) And if you need the source code: kermit/archives/cku192src.tar.Z (or .gz) UNIX binaries have names like: ckuker.name where "name" is the name of the UNIX C-Kermit makefile entry, such as "ckuker.du40" (Digital Unix 4.0) or "ckuker.bebox"; or: ckuker.name-osversion where "osversion" denotes the operating system version, in case it makes a difference, e.g. "ckuker.hpux100o-10.00" versus "ckuker.hpux100o-10.10"; or: ckuker.name-hardwaretype where the same makefile entry can be used on different hardware platforms such as i386 (Intel), sparc, powerpc, mips, etc; or: ckuker.name-osversion-hardwaretype or when the same hardware/software platform has different binary types, such as ELF vs COFF, you might even find: ckuker.name-osversion-hardwaretype-binarytype In general, you can't run a binary built under a newer OS version than you have. In some cases, you can't run a binary built under a *different* OS version than you have. All binaries were built with the regular makefile unless indicated otherwise. Of course, you also can't run a binary that was built for a different hardware platform or operating system than you have. Remember to "chmod +x" after transfer, and rename to "kermit".
